Why Web-Applications are Better than Desktop Applications

This summer (2010) I and Radhika( Loomba) are going to Arcellor-Mittal, Chennai, India to work with them to make a "Steel Cost Estimation Software" for them. Following write-up talks on some of the parameters to consider when deciding the type of application (viz. Desktop vs Web-Based).

For people not aware of what is a "Web Based Software" and a "Desktop Based Software".
A typical desktop applications are Word Processors, Games, Media Player etc. Online shooping carts, social networking sites etc are web-applications. Consider the "Google Search Engine", it is a web-based software, in the sense it means you only need a web-browser (like Mozilla Firefox) to access it. On the other hand a desktop application like "Microsoft Office", you need to install it on your computer and then use it. The advantages of web-based apps are highlighted below.

Compairison of Web and Desktop Application

Maintenance: Web based applications are to be installed only once but in case of a desktop application, it has to be installed on each and every work-station. Talking of upgrades, it has to be done only in one machine, but for desktop apps, you need to go through the curbersome upgrade on each work station.

Ease of Use: Desktop apps are confined to be used from one workstation, but web apps are used through a conmputer network, so it can be accessed from the entire world. Only drawback of a web-application is the connectivity. In absence or poor internet can cause performance issues with a web-application.
